My Preface: I love music, good music, bad music, olde music, and new music. For each blog post I am going to add a song that I would love it if you listened to while reading my post.
The preface: (where my life starts to change)
To enhance your experience please listen to this song while reading. Danger Zone
I always like to read the preface to books, It seems that
they are full of lofty ideas about what is going to happen and how the book is
going to change my life and change the way I teach. I want the books to change my life, I want them to give me something to think about, to challenge what I know, and give me solutions to problems I didn't know existed as well as some that I do know. That being said, I am a bit
of a cynic when it comes to life altering books, however, I think that this
book “Multiple Voices, Multiple texts” (Dornan Et. Al, 1997) will have a lot of
information for me as well as a lot of areas that I can help my students. I recently
was asked to teach a broadcasting class as well as my regular English language
Arts classes. I have been thinking about what I want my students to get out of
this broadcasting class, how I am going to run it, and what I really want my
students to learn from that class. The idea of using reading as a way to
synthesize information and that they should be constantly trying to learn how
to read as well as using reading to learn is a great idea. With broadcasting
students will be exposed to a lot of new technologies and with that exposure
they are going to need to learn how to read the types of books that contain
information on how to complete procedural things. By helping my students to
learn this new skill or reading and then asking them to share and synthesize
more information with each other I am sure that they will learn a lot more. I
also look at broadcasting and a way that I can get students to start writing
things. I will not allow any thing be turned in and broadcast without a
transcript of what is being said, I also want my students to get a feel for
video journalism and help them to see how writing is not just something we do
on paper, or something we do with a monitor in front of us and a keyboard ,
where the words we say and the information we give is to be seen by only the
people on their friends list or on snap chat. Twitter and its 140 Characters is
not the only way to communicate. I want my student to collaborate and create
things that will help touch each other, that will help get a point across, will
help to create eloquent speakers and writers and give them the skills and the
forum that they can share those things with other people. I also want to create
an environment that this book talks about, helping students find a lifelong
love for reading not only as a pursuit to learn but that they should learn how
to read to read specific things. All in all, this preface seemed to speak to me
and whether the information contained within the book does change my life in a
great way or in a small way, even the act of reviewing this book for a blog is
helping me to learn already and for that, I am grateful.
I agree with you reading the preface for a book gives the reader clear image about the book and the author as well. reading preface for me is like a book summary that tells me wither the book is matching what i am looking for or not. As teachers, i think it is important to advise our students to pay attention to the preface.
